1. The Real Enemy: Flying Embers

Embers are the primary cause of home loss. When pushed by high winds, they act as the leading cause of ignition, landing on vulnerable areas of a home, such as:

  • Gutters and Roofs: Accumulated pine needles, dead leaves, and debris act as fuel for embers.
  • Decks and Porches: Embers fall between deck boards or land on patio furniture, initiating a fire.
  • Vents and Crevices: Embers can be blown into attic vents, chimney openings, or small gaps, allowing them to ignite insulation, newspapers, or debris inside the house. 

2. Radiant Heat and the “Zone 0” Threat

If embers do not immediately ignite a structure, radiant heat often does. This is the indirect heat emitted by burning materials nearby, such as trees, fences, or a neighbor’s house.
